2010 recorded a nearly 37 percent spike year over year in the number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in the United States – and more were killed in California than any other state except Texas.

Yet Sacramento-area agencies haven’t had a line-of-duty death since 2008, when sheriff’s deputies in Sacramento and Yolo counties were killed.

Sacramento County’s new sheriff, Scott Jones, said it’s hard to say what contributed to local agencies bucking the national trend in 2010.

“There’s no way to extrapolate over time any consistency with regards to officers’ injuries or death,” Jones said.
