A corrections officer in Napanoch died Friday afternoon after the prison van he was driving collided with a car and overturned, according to The Daily Freeman.
Corrections Officer Casimiro Pomales had worked at the Eastern Correction Facility for more than 22 years.
The collision occurred shortly after 1:35 p.m. on the New York State Thruway and the 52-year-old was pronounced dead on the scene.
Another corrections officer and an inmate who were passengers in the van suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the report said.
Pomales was transporting the imate to a medical appointment in Albany when the van was sideswiped by a Mercury Sable that apparently improperly changed lanes.
Officials said that charges against the driver were unlikely.
Pomales is survived by his wife, Dorothea, and several grown children.
