Officer Charged Had Previous Driving Issues

A police officer who drove through a red light while racing to an emergency call, plowing into a van and injuring six people, struggled with some of the skills needed for police work, including responding to emergencies, according to his personnel files.

Officer Ryan Kiely, who has since resigned, had trouble with Code 2 — or emergency — responses, orienting himself in town and officer safety, among other things, according to the personnel reports released by a lawyer for one of the crash victims.

He also had problems with his eyesight, the reports show; a training officer noted “issues with Officer Kiely seeing things well at night and seeing vehicles to his right” — the direction from which the van was coming on the night of June 10, 2009.
