Mecklenburg, 35, would tell dispatchers the suspect’s vehicle was traveling 115 mph into Pasco County. Seconds later, his communication stopped.
“Myself, along with dispatchers, attempted to contact Deputy Mecklenburg over the radio, but he continued not to respond,” wrote Deputy Michael Junker in his report.
As Junker approached the 17000 block of U.S. Highway 41 a mile south of County Line Road, he saw emergency lights in the distance. A Florida Highway Patrol trooper already was at the scene.
Mecklenburg’s vehicle looked like a mangled hunk of scrap metal.
