Utah Family Sues After Deadly Pursuit

LOGAN (AP) — A Petersboro, Cache County, family is suing Weber County over the death of a teen killed after a 2010 police pursuit.

The Herald Journal of Logan reports the family of Wayne J. Torrie filed the complaint in the 2nd District Court.

The lawsuit says a Weber County deputy violated rules related to high-speed pursuits on March 23.

The lawsuit says the Petersboro teen was distraught after being teased in school and threatened to commit suicide by crashing if he spotted any police officers.

The deputy spotted the teen, who sped up to 75 mph before crashing west of Ogden. He died the next day.

Attorneys for Weber County contend Torrie caused his own death, but the lawsuit says officers cannot pursue at high speeds if they know the identity of the driver and can safely apprehend him later.
