provides, you may contact: 2009 Academy Catalog Link: http://www.ag.state.oh.us/le/training/pubs/potaCourseCatalog2009.pdf DISPATCHING FOR EMERGENCY RESPONSE AND PURSUI T This one day course provides law enforcement dispatchers with knowledge and skills necessary for communicating during an emergency response or pursuit situation. Classroom instruction, video/audio critique and roll play exercises concerning situational stress, information necessity and communication techniques will be followed by on-track, in-car demonstrations. This will provide dispatchers a perspective from inside the cruiser. Dispatchers will also have the opportunity to drive a simulated response and pursuit using state of the art simulators. The day of training will culminate with realistic dispatch scenarios. Dispatchers will handle communications for mock chases as they are actually taking place on the driving facility. Note: Students should dress for the weather. Helmets will be provided, but students may bring their own approved DOT helmets if desired. Since this class takes place in conjunction with the Tactical Driving Course, it is an afternoon course starting at 1:00 PM and dismissing at 10:00 PM.

BASIC EMERGENCY VEHICLE OPERATIONS This course is a modified emergency vehicle operations lesson plan from the Peace Officer Basic Training Curriculum Driving Unit. In a classroom setting, the student will learn Non- Emergency/Emergency and Pursuit driving theory. The student will also learn the required driving skills taught in the Basic Academy practical exercises. The course is offered to those who did not have driving as a part of their basic program or to students who wish to refresh skills or have had driving difficulties. Outside exercises may require foul weather equipment. Students should bring current copies of their Department Pursuit and Emergency Response Policy. Note: Vehicles for practical exercises will be provided. Helmets will be provided. However students may bring their own DOT certified helmet if desired.

EMERGENCY VEHICLE OPERATIONS FOR THE FIELD TRAINING OFFICER This course is designed to provide the currently certified field training officer (FTO) with the necessary information to assist new officer trainees with the challenges of emergency driving. Current legal issues will be covered, along with pursuit and emergency response theory. Vehicle dynamics, use of the police radio, physiological issues involved in police driving will be learned. Techniques needed to recognize, evaluate, and correct driving errors are the focus of the curriculum. The student will be required to drive and act as coaches during practical driving event scenarios using OPOTA vehicles. Note: Students should bring copies of their departmental FTO manual and pursuit/emergency response policies. Helmets will be provided. However students may bring their own DOT certified helmet if desired. All students must bring a current driver’s/operator’s license. Shoes or boots which lace and completely cover the entire foot are mandatory. Students will not be permitted to drive with sandal type footwear. Prerequisites: Must be a currently Certified Field Training Officer or enrolled in an upcoming Field Training Officer Course.

OFF-ROAD FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE OPERATIONS FOR EMERGENCY VEHICLES LEVEL I This two-day course is designed to provide basic knowledge of off-road operations to emergency response professionals. Topics include; equipment, winching, side tilt, cross axle, ascent, descent, spotting, angle of approach and departure. Students will be paired in teams for practical events. Proper obstacle negotiation and mechanical sympathy will be a focus of the class. High center gravity operation on and off-road will be addressed. OPOTA vehicles will be used; however, students are welcome to bring agency four wheel drive vehicles if desired. Note: All students must bring a current driver’s/operator’s license. Shoes or boots which lace and completely cover the entire foot are mandatory. Students will not be permitted to drive with sandal type footwear. Students should also bring insect repellent, sun screen, sun glasses and work gloves.

OFF-ROAD FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE OPERATIONS FOR EMERGENCY VEHICLES This two day class is designed to follow the Level I class. It provides an opportunity for students to use basic techniques learned in the Off-Road Level I course in a more challenging environment. Students will use OPOTA supplied 4x4 vehicles and may bring their own departmental off-road vehicles if desired. Training will take place at a remote closed facility which offers dynamic off-road obstacles. Travel to a rustic off-campus location will be necessary requiring students to make over-night stay arrangements. A list of area motels will be provided upon registration. Free primitive camp sites will be available on site if desired. Problem solving will be a focus. Topics covered include: equipment, winching, side tilt, cross axle, ascent, descent, spotting, angle of approach and departure. Students will be paired in teams for practical events. Proper obstacle negotiation and mechanical sympathy will be a focus of the class. High Center gravity operation will be addressed. Prerequisites: Students must have successfully completed the Level I class or equivalent. It is recommended that the classes be taken in direct succession as the Level I and Level II courses are scheduled back to back. Note: All students must bring a current driver’s/operator’s license. Students should also bring insect repellent, sun screen, boots, hat, sun glasses and work gloves. Special Concerns: This is a challenging course which is held in a rustic, remote Ohio location near Somerset east of Lancaster. Students should be prepared for varying weather and terrain. Extended hours/night time or late night exercises are possible. Emphasis is placed on slow deliberate maneuvering. Every effort is made to avoid vehicle damage. Mud, dirt and passing limb scratches will occur.

PURSUIT TERMINATION TECHNIQUES This two-day course is dedicated to providing students with the knowledge and skills necessary for successful termination of a vehicle pursuit. The students will receive classroom and practical hands-on training in the use of Precision Immobilization Techniques (PIT), tire deflation devices, pursuit intervention techniques, channeling and moving/stationary roadblocks. Legal and liability issues will also be addressed. Specially equipped OPOTA training vehicles will be used. Special Concerns: Students are to bring foul weather gear. This course requires that students engage in moderate physical activity including but not limited to brief running, lifting and throwing. It is recommended that students are proficient drivers prior to enrollment and are in good physical condition. Helmets will be provided, however students may bring their own DOT certified helmet if desired. It is also recommended, but not required, that students have attended a Tactical Driving Course or an emergency Vehicle Operations Course within the past three years. Some instruction may be provided by instructors-in-training, under supervision. All students must bring a current driver’s/operator’s license. Shoes or boots which lace and completely cover the entire foot are mandatory. Students will not be permitted to drive with sandal type footwear.

PURSUIT TERMINATION TECHNIQUES REFRESHER This one-day course is designed to provide an opportunity to those who have already successfully completed the Pursuit Termination Techniques basic or instructor course to review and practice skills and maneuvers. Current theory and legal trends will be discussed in a classroom setting followed by simulator and on-tract practice of Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT), spike strips, rolling road blocks, stationary roadblocks and vehicle intercept. OPOTA vehicles will be used. Helmets will be available, but students may bring their own DOT approved helmets if desired. Special Concerns: Students are to bring foul weather gear. All students must bring a current driver’s/operator’s license. Shoes or boots which lace and completely cover the entire foot are mandatory. Students will not be permitted to drive with sandal type footwear. Prerequisites: Must have completed a Pursuit Termination Techniques Basic or Instructor Course.

TACTICAL DRIVING This advanced five-day course is dedicated to providing students with the concepts, skills and behaviors unique to the emergency response situation. Students will be trained and tested on numerous steering and braking applications, line-of-travel driving, cornering methods, route selection considerations, etc. Additionally, students are trained in legal aspects of law enforcement driving along with the human factors involved in responding to emergencies. The student will participate in actual pursuit driving scenarios. Nighttime driving exercises are required, usually scheduled for the fourth day of class. The student will use an OPOTA vehicle equipped with added safety features to perform dynamic and advanced practical exercises. Students may be asked to assist with movement and placement of cones and set up of events. Foul weather and hot weather equipment is recommended. All students should bring a copy of their departmental Pursuit and Emergency Response Policy. Some instruction may be provided by instructors-in-training, under supervision. This course is not recommended for remedial or corrective driving students. It is recommended that all attendees be in good physical condition. Helmets will be provided, however students may bring their own DOT certified helmet if desired. Note: All students must bring a current driver’s/operator’s license. Shoes or boots which lace and completely cover the entire foot are mandatory. Students will not be permitted to drive with sandal type footwear.

Cost: $655-London Instructor: Jeff Eggleston BASIC ACADEMY DRIVING INSTRUCTOR This five-day course is designed to provide the student with skills necessary to teach the Driving Unit in the Peace Officer Basic Training. The class also provides the foundation for in-service driver training. Liability issues and other topics will be discussed in a classroom setting. There is extensive practical application of driving techniques and students must demonstrate competency in driving skills and the ability to instruct others in these techniques. Students will be required to assist with instructing a Basic Emergency Vehicle Operations Course during the last three days of class and will be required to make an in-class presentation. Night exercises are possible. Vehicles will be provided. Techniques for handling in-service and problem drivers will be covered. Note: Students are outside on the driving course regardless of the weather. Foul weather and hot weather equipment is recommended. Students are required to bring a copy of their department emergency response and pursuit policy. Helmets will be provided, however students may bring their own DOT certified helmet if desired. All students must bring a current driver’s /operator’s license. Shoes or boots which lace and completely cover the entire foot are mandatory. Students will not be permitted to drive with sandal type footwear. Special Concerns: Student instructors must dress appropriately as instructors during days three, four and five of the course. BDU style trousers or slacks and polo type shirts are required. Prerequisites: It is strongly recommended that each student successfully complete a Basic Emergency Vehicle Operations Course within the previous three years. Previous completion of an Instructor Skills course in not required for attendance, but will prove very helpful.

Prerequisites: It is required that attendees complete a two-day Pursuit Termination Techniques course or be a certified Emergency Vehicle Operations Instructor prior to enrollment. Special Concerns: Students are to bring foul weather gear. This course requires that students engage in moderate physical activity to include but not limited to brief running, lifting, and throwing. It is recommended that students are proficient drivers prior to enrollment and are in good physical condition. Students use an OPOTA police vehicle equipped with added safety features to perform advanced practical exercises. Students are asked to assist with movement and placement of cones and events. Foul weather and hot weather equipment is recommended. Students should bring a copy of their department pursuit and emergency response policy. Note: This course is not recommended for remedial or corrective driving students. It is recommended that attendees be in good physical condition. Students find it helpful if they have previously attended an instructor skills course. Attendance in an emergency vehicle operations course within the past three years also proves helpful. Helmets are provided, however, students may bring their own DOT-certified helmet if desired. Students must bring a current vehicle operator’s license. Shoes which lace and cover the entire foot are mandatory. Special Concerns: Appropriate attire for instruction is required such as slacks or BDU style trousers along with plain or department logo polo type shirts. Prerequisites: Although it is not mandatory, students find it helpful if they have previously attended a Tactical Driving Course and an Instructor Skills course.
